SESSION REPORT
Beyond Chatbots — What You Can Actually Build With AI
The Research Cell, Bahria University Health Sciences Campus, Islamabad (BUHSCI), organized “Beyond Chatbots — What You Can Actually Build With AI” on 6 October 2026. The session aimed to move participants beyond using AI only for questions and information retrieval, demonstrating what medical students and faculty can realistically build with current AI tools.
The event was moderated by Dr. Aisha Nasir Hashmi, Research Officer, and comprised two sessions: a 90-minute session for first-year MBBS students (9:00–10:30 AM) and a 60-minute faculty session (10:40–11:40 AM), held in the Lecture Hall, 1st Floor.
Dr. Ehsan M. Kiani — Consultant Interventional Radiologist, Heart International Hospital; Founder & CEO, DataCraft.
DataCraft focuses on helping healthcare professionals turn routinely generated clinical data into structured research outputs through practical, hands-on methods. Its approach uses accessible tools, including Google Forms, Google Sheets/Excel and freely available AI tools, without requiring prior coding or advanced statistics knowledge.
The session addressed the practical use of generative AI for problem-solving rather than prompting alone. A central proposition was that clearly defining a problem can be more important than programming expertise when building useful digital tools. For students, the focus was on what can be built without a programming background; for faculty, the session introduced a “From Problem to Prototype” approach.
The session opened with a working photo-archive application featuring semantic search and face recognition, demonstrating what a clinician without programming experience can develop. A group reaction-time game was then built live from a plain-English description in approximately ten minutes and used by 49 students on their phones. The fastest response was 127 ms, with a class median of 249 ms.
The session also showed that students are already experimenting with AI: approximately 30% of respondents had made something using AI, while one first-year student had developed a working website of clinical calculators for MDCAT students.
Students were asked before and after the session: “Do you think you can build a complex app or product using AI?”
· Yes increased from 24% before the session to 61% afterwards.
· Maybe decreased from 47% to 33%; Not sure from 12% to 6%; and No from 18% to 0%.
· Among the 26 students who responded at both time points, 15 moved upward, 10 remained unchanged, and 1 moved downward.
These findings indicate a clear increase in students’ perceived ability and confidence to build applications using AI.
The faculty session explored practical applications of AI in academic and clinical settings, including:
· Clinical documentation: dictation and structured note generation in mixed Urdu and English, with attention to privacy and institutional compliance.
· Teaching: generation of assessment items and MCQs from source texts, supported by review workflows and appropriate disclosure.
· Research: support from proposal development and analysis through referencing and manuscript preparation.
· Existing datasets: identifying research questions, analysing available data and progressing towards publishable outputs.
The sessions demonstrated that AI can lower the technical barrier to developing useful applications and research workflows, while clinical and academic judgement remains essential. The discussion emphasized precise problem definition, human verification, responsible data handling and informed AI use.
The event also established potential areas for future collaboration between the BUCM Research Cell and DataCraft, particularly practical AI training, clinical data utilization, research methodology and manuscript development.
