World Maritime Day 2019 at NCMPR (Karachi)
“Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”
Karachi, September 26th: National Centre for Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR) the Karachi Chapter of National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA), Islamabad organized a Seminar to mark the celebrations of World Maritime Day 2019. The event was held on 26th September 2019, at Maritime Museum Karachi. The World Maritime Day is celebrated every year to signify the contributions of International Maritime Industry in World’s economy and to bring attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and marine environment. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”. DG Maritime Affairs Mr.Shakeel Ahmed Mangnejo graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
During the seminar Mr. Obaidullah former director NCMPR highlighted the state of Maritime Affairs in Pakistan with particular focus on the contemporary challenges faced by the Maritime Industry in the country. Ms. Nasreen Haque vice president SZABIST emphasized the importance of empowering women and the challenges and opportunities for women in the Maritime business. Dr. Nuzhat Khan DG NIO shared her journey of being the first female oceanographer and the encounters and prospects of her path to DG NIO and her concerns for sustainable development.
Director General Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) Vice Admiral (Retd) Syed Khawar Ali Shah HI (M) applauded and acknowledged all the speakers for their knowledgeable presentations. He further said that maritime industry has secured a vital standing in our daily life and serves as the backbone of global trade and economy. In concluding remarks, the Chief Guest said that maritime sector plays significant role in creating employment opportunities and prosperity through advancing trade by sea. He said the theme of the day provides us an opportunity to identify and promote women empowerment in ports, shipping and other related segments of maritime sector. During the event the prominent female personalities who have excelled in maritime sector were presented shields to acknowledge their contribution. The Chief Guest appreciated efforts of NIMA in general and NCMPR in particular for organizing the seminar and providing a platform to deliberate on issues related to maritime domain in Pakistan. The event was attended by various prominent dignitaries, serving and retired naval officers, government officials, intellectuals, researchers and students.
