PMD has a vital role to facilitate maritime sector of Pakistan through weather forecasts and warning system in the coastal areas
22 Aug, 2017: “Pakistan Meteorology Department (PMD) has a vital role to facilitate maritime sector of Pakistan through weather forecasts and warning system in the coastal areas”. Mr. Abdul Rashid Chief Meteorologist Karachi at PMD, expressed these views in a discourse on “Pakistan Met Department & Its Services for Maritime Sector of Pakistan” organized by National Centre for Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR) at Bahria University Karachi campus.
In his address Mr. Rashid added that PMD provides concrete information regarding oceanic patterns including sea state, winds, typhoons, cyclone, Tsunami, hurricanes warnings are frequently disseminated among Pakistan Navy, ports, shipping and fisheries. However, because of insufficient observatory systems, Pakistan does not fall upto the criteria of World Meteorological Organizations (WMO).
Rear Admiral Mukhtar Khan HI(M), Director General Institute of Maritime Affairs (IMA), Bahria University, in his concluding remarks emphasized that significance of PMD for naval operations in air, sea and land is inevitable. He reiterated that the PMD’s weathers forecasts and reports are of great importance for Pakistan Navy and other maritime organizations to undertake routine tasks of their domain. He suggested that it is essential to enhance the cooperation and collaboration among PMD, PN and other maritime stakeholders of Pakistan to serve the national interest in a befitting manner. The discourse was attended by large number of naval officials, academicians, maritime stakeholders and students. The event had interactive question and answer session as well.
