Dr. Minghua Zhao

Professor Minghua is Head of the China Centre (Maritime), Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering. Minghua is an established maritime sociologist with an excellent international reputation and specialist knowledge and research expertise on maritime labour issues in shipping and fisheries. Her research interest includes in particular issues concerning gender and China. Specifically, Minghua’s research covers seafarers’ labour market, their welfare and work and living conditions, employment policy and practice for women seafarers in commercial shipping, women’s participation in fisheries in European and Chinese coastal communities. Minghua is the principal investigator for the SWiC Project.
Dr. Minghua joined Greenwich Maritime Institute (GMI) in 2004 from the seafarers International Research Center, Cardiff University where she was the Deputy Director (1998-2004). Before that, Dr. Zhao was with women studies program, University Of Hawaii, USA(1997-98) and with Henan University in china (1985-90). At GMI, she supervised the International Maritime Policy and MBA Maritime Management postgraduate programs, supervises postgraduate student’s dissertations and teaches various postgraduate courses.
She was also the Chairperson of China Maritime Center at GMI and undertook various postgraduate courses and research of M.Phil/PhD students. She completed her PhD degree from University of Bristol in 1996.
