TEAM BAHRIA UNIVERSITY BIC ISLAMABAD BAGS A NATIONAL AWARD FROM PTA
On 31st January 2017, a team from Bahria University Islamabad won the third place in the Pakistan Mobile App Awards 2016. The Awards were conducted by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. This national competition was the first step taken by PTA to involve the youth in problem solving through IT and equipping the young generation with modern equipment. In pursuance of PTA commitment to promote innovation, advancements and accessibility in technology PTA and Internet Society (ISOC) Asia-Pacific Bureau has launched “Pakistan Mobile App Awards 2016” in collaboration with Ministry of IT & Telecom, Telenor & Special Talent Exchange Program (STEP). This year’s competition theme is “Embracing Mobile Accessibility”, which aims to focus on the development of mobile applications on the needs of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Pakistan. The independent international sources quote that about ten to fifteen percent of Pakistan’s population consists of people with disabilities (PWDs). The Competition judged ready-to-use mobile applications for the persons from disability groups with Visual Impairment, deaf or hard of hearing, Physical disabilities and cognitive impairments
The application RollOut is built to facilitate the physically disabled citizens and to make their daily lives as convenient as it is for any other member of the society. RollOut’s main idea is making accessibility to public places easier for the physically disabled persons. The app included information of Hotels, Cafes, Hospitals, shops, recreational areas and educational institutes, along with governmental organizations. The idea is to make the physically challenged people become a part of the society and live in the society like every abled citizen. RollOut will enable special persons to live close to normal people with the help of the data provided and would enable them to work and communicate with other people for daily affairs. RollOut provides information of ramp, elevator, bathroom, parking and facilitator services. The team plans to launch the App on Google Play in February 2017.
The team which was incubated in the Business Incubation Center of Bahria University under the supervisions of Dr. Faisal Aftab Director of ORIC, and the manager of Business Incubation Center Mr Muhammad Mehrul Hassan, The team Roll Out consisted of Haitham Naser as the team lead. The rest of the members included Rafia Saleem, Asad, Laraib Zehra, Toufeeq Rahim, Mariam Ijaz Kiani and Naufil Bin Amir.The team from Bahria University Islamabad campus appeared in the final round of Pakistan Mobile App Awards 2016 along with the 4 finalists from different institutes from all across Pakistan. The Chief Guest for the ceremony was the President of Pakistan Mr. Mamnoon Hussain, along with Minister of Information Technology Anushah Rahman, Chairman PTA Syed Ismail Shah and CEO Telenor Irfan Wahab Khan.
The competition was held at PNCA. President Mamnoon Hussain talked about the Digital Era of Pakistan. President Mamnoon Hussain on Tuesday said that focus on Information Technology (IT) for stability of national economy was must and the use of IT was the need of the hour to inform the young generation about modern learning and research trends. Additionally, Minister IT Anushah Rahman added that mobile application award would go a long way in developing a strong relationship between the academia, industry and the relevant government organizations and would turn out to be exemplary for the rest of the sectors of our economy.
