BAHRIA UNIVERSITY NEED, MERIT& OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS/ FINANCIAL AID

GENERAL

 1.         Bahria University, like all good universities has a caring policy towards the students, particularly those who are academically good but have serious financial constraints.  The University provides scholarships to such students enabling them to continue their studies.  These scholarships broadly fall into four categories i.e. Advance Merit, Merit, Kinship and Need Based Scholarships.  Details of these are given in this document.  The scholarships are in the form of reduction in their tuition fee by 60%, 45% or 30% depending upon the severity of need from case to case basis.  The Competent Authority may however, approve complete waiver for the tuition fee depending upon the circumstances.

 PROVISION OF FUNDS FOR THE SCHOLARSHIPS

2.         Bahria University has created an Endowment Fund where in, it will donate funds regularly for the purpose of helping out students in need and encouraging brilliant minds to maintain their academic portfolio.  Funding will also be obtained from different Govt., Private donor agencies and NGO’s in order to provide assistance to maximum number of students. 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE APPLICANTS OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS

3.         The eligibility criteria for different type of scholarships is as under:

 a.         Advance Merit Scholarships:      In order to maintain a high percentage of talented students, Bahria University encourages toppers of various boards to join its degree programmes by providing 100% concessions in tuition fee.  All such students who have obtained first position in the Board examination will be eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship will be for the entire program. However its continuation during the subsequent semesters will be dependent on the awardee maintaining his/her minimum CGPA of 3.0.

b.         Merit Scholarships:            In order to encourage students to excel and compete in academics, Bahria University provides merit scholarships to all such students who achieve highest GPA in the semester result in a particular degree programme for that session.  The scholarship will be in the form of 50% concession in fee provided the CGPA of the student is above 3.75. The scholarship is tenable in the semester following the one in which the student got first position. In case of a tie, a student with higher percentage of marks shall be awarded the scholarship.

c.         Need Based Scholarships:          These scholarships are available for such students who have serious financial problems to the extent that it may be difficult for them to continue their studies without some financial assistance.  Such candidates if already registered students, may apply when applications are invited during an early week of the semester.  Fresh entrants to Bahria University may submit their request for scholarship when they have deposited their fee after becoming bonafide students of BU.  The scholarship once granted in this category remains available to the students for the entire degree programme provided their performance does not fall below 2.0

d.         Kinship Scholarships:      In order to facilitate both brothers / sisters to study together in this university, Bahria University offers 50% fee concession to the younger one.  Such student becomes eligible for scholarship once both become regular students. This scheme will be discontinued from Spring 2008 onwards in the light of decision taken in this regards.

 GENERAL ELIGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

 4.         Eligibility of students for scholarship shall be subject to following conditions:

a.         Students of Bahria University in any semester are eligible, subject to the conditions as indicated with respect to their respective category.

b.         Students in receipt of any other scholarship/ benefit of kind such as free laptop/other fee concession, are ineligible to apply for any other scholarship.

c.         Progress of need , merit based scholarships will be reviewed every semester as per details given in para (8) “ Monitoring Beneficiaries of Scholarships”.

 HOW TO APPLY

 5.         Following procedure is to followed for submitting applications for the scholarship:

a.         For category (a) an application stating facts and accompanied by relevant certificates / proof of achieving first position may be submitted to the Director of the campus .

b.         For category (b)& (c)  students will submit applications on prescribed form click here to download form. After such applications have been called by the institute or as explained in para 3 above.  The application forms may be obtained from and then submitted to the office of the Head of the respective department.  The information must be supported by documentary evidence where required, to assess the validity of claim.  Claims not supported by documentary evidence may not be considered. 

 SELECTION PROCEDURE

6.         Respective campus Directors will hold interviews and short list candidates. Final interviews will be held by the Central Selection Committee (CSC) as detailed below, which will make final recommendations.

One more member may be co-opted by the committee. The composition of the selection committee shall be reviewed  every year.

AWARD AND DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP

7.         Notification for the award of scholarship with complete financial details will be issued immediately after the approval by the Competent Authority.  The scholarship will remain available to the student subject to the conditions mentioned in para(8) for the period as detailed below:

a.         Advance Merit scholarship is awarded for the whole degree programme for which student has registered provided his / her CGPA does not drop below 2.75.

b.         Merit scholarship para (3b) is only for one semester i.e. the semester following the one in which the student got 1st position in the program and semester GPA is 3.75. It is in the form of 50% concession in tuition fee.

c.         Need Based Scholarship para (3c) is generally for the entire duration of the degree program provided CGPA does not fall below 2.0. However, the committee will review all cases every semester and would recommend continuity of the scholarship, subject to the continued good conduct of the student. The amount of concession will be decided by the competent authority depending upon the financial constarints of the individual.

 MONITORING THE BENEFICIARIES OF SCHOLARSHIPS

 8.         The Central Scholarship Committee of Bahria University will formally review cases of all scholarship holders every semester for monitoring progress and continued good conduct. It will submit its recommendations to the Rector Bahria University Islamabad for the continuation or otherwise of the scholarship. The respective Campus Directors will send complete semester result of all beneficiaries, to the committee. Scholarships of the students, whose performance falls short of the required parameters, may be recommended for discontinuation of the scholars.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIP SCHEMES

9.         The Central Scholarship Committee will explore possibilities to get more grants / scholarships from Govt. / Non Govt. and donor agencies to help the needy students of Bahria University.  The application form, various execution committees and rules stated in this document will be applicable to all such new bursaries unless special conditions are required to be met by the sponsors for a particular scholarship scheme.

CHANGES IN THE POLICY

10               The policy document is subject to changes/amendments from time to time depending upon the future  requirements and status of funds available for the grant of scholarship.

RIGHT TO CLAIM SCHOLARSHIP

11.       No student shall have any right to claim any of the scholarships mentioned above.  The scholarship can be withdrawn if the academic progress and conduct of the awardee falls below the satisfactory level.
